be real careful but I’m pretty sure that PVC pipping is nasty stuff to like drink from thats why they use copper pipping. That stuff is suppose to be cancerous.

watch out for those safty issues. tp valve and possibly xpansion tank. wouldnt want to see scalding water rain down on a passer by. watch the clip of mythbusters hot water heater bomb.

You do realize that you need something to absorb the expansion of the water and relieve excessive pressure if the supply valve is shut off. The water heater should have a t&p relief and the expansion should back up the cold water supply. Be careful, you could be making a bomb.

i am working on mine now! What i am having trouble with is how to do it & make sure the water will circulate naturally. I don’t want to put a pump on it. My house is about 2 feet off the ground & the hotwater tank is about 10 ft from where i will place my copper tubing. What i need help with is can i run hot back n2 the hotwtr inlet? and have it going under house too. WIll it go all the way back up w/ gravitational force? I am using 1/4 tubing to build pressure (is that correct way of thinkn ?)

Excellent use of the Apple audio loops.
Also nice work with the Casio Exilim Ex-F1.

OH NO, it fell to 35-40 last night?
You should try implementing your solutions in canada, where we really need heat….

That’s great!

Cool, at first I thought that you were going to use the water straight out of the hose. It is neat to see that you are using it as a “booster” to your regular water heater.

Nice video guys! A lot of fun to watch!
January 16th, 2009 at 1:40 am
In the video the water temperature rises to 60degrees celcius. What was the temperature outsite at that moment ? If it is freezing, the metal on the roof could have to opposite response to the hose or not? Is there not some turning point in temperature ?

my grandpa has been doing that for over 15 years, heated his pool to 90 and his hottub to 106 easily in the summer, had a couple thousand feet of black hose coiled on his roof, its a really great system

however you could still use the same set up but you would need to use a heat transfer system to transfer the heat to the water without using the original water. Or just use black iron.

Some questions:
Is your hose UV-resitant?
What about bacteria?
What did it cost? All the piping, connections, drilling and insulating? How many hours did it take?
How long untill it pays itself? Will it ever?
It’s way too cold where I live. So…
Nice video but there are some drawbacks.
Please don’t do this and just try to use less water.

That is a good idea. Place a shiny sheet below the tubing. Suspend the tubing with styrofoam or wood. This will place it between the top and the bottom.
Even Better. Take silicone with rubber gloves and smear the entire inside box thin layer if you use wood. Then you can apply a mild vacuum. Acrylic sheet to cover. This will insulate the best but honestly keeping the vacuum is very hard to do 100% leak free. If you try it and cannot keep the vacuum, at least you have a good seal minimal leak

I was thinking mounting the line inside an insulated panel simular to a solar panel so there would be no wind, rain, snow, ice etc. to cool the lines

How about black poly water sprinkler line tubing? I would think you would want that tubing to hold as much if not more water then what the tank in your water heater. That way the waterheater might not run at all when taking showers or doing laundry.

Thank god for Dan a very fashionable couple

How about the degradation of the tubes by UV and weather condition? I think that the water could be not healty after a short time. I would prefer invest in a system useful for every kind of use, include water to drink and to wash yourself. Whatever, I appreciate the effort

would a small spacer between each hose get more sunlight yes/no???
January 16th, 2009 at 1:40 am
There are professionally designed systems & have so far proven to be non cost effective.
A Normal person is not going to drive their cost of operation up, instead we look for ways to cut cost. Most of this green crap is just that, crap. Your hose idea’s good in theory but to do well, would be cost prohibitive for years of operation as compared to today’s methods of heating water.
This would in no way be a cost effective supplement in the long haul.
Drill here, Drill now! seek alternatives
